The American Caliban
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are [a] few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

Dwight Eisenhower, in 1954. From David Sirota, quoted from Eisenhower's papers.

And Clinton got rid of welfare.

I think that this quote reflects how close the Democrats and the Republicans have been in terms of policy. They both implement the same elite consensus, but they market it differently.

the whole thing has shifted so far to the right that Eisenhower Republicans are now viewed as dangerously radical "liberals". it's disheartening.
