I can't. I grew up in an academic family in Southern California in the 1970s.

That passion bit is pitch perfect.

Are you on goodreads? I am tinymammoth. Teeth said you were on there but I can't find you.

I am in theory on goodreads but I don't use it. Is it fun?

I like it and they've done a lot of things right. If it were mine I would tweak a few things though.

There used to be a site called Alexlit that just did book recommendations, and they were marvelously accurate. It figured out what people had the closest tastes to your own, and then showed the favorite books of those people. It was a cult hit, but it never got really monetized and has finally died.

Neither Amazon, nor goodreads, nor Librarything, does their recommendations this way. Thus, the general perception is that book recommendations just can't be done well. This is frustrating to me. The folks at goodreads say this would be too computationally expensive :(

Goodreads does a thing where you can recommend specific books to a friend, which I like, but I would implement it differently.
