For Black History Month: Bob’s Homecoming [Feb. 27th, 2012|07:42 pm]
The American Caliban

This is Bob Trout’s story and not mine, so I’ll do my best to transcribe:

When we came back from Vietnam, the protesters were waiting for us. It wasn’t just yelling and a little spitting, it was a lot of throwing stuff. We had nowhere to go and no way around it. And these cabbies, all black guys, just came in and rescued us. They were taking bottles and shit. And they just rolled on in and took the guys to the strip clubs and bars and whorehouses, wherever they needed to go, without any complaint and at some real personal risk. I want everyone to know about that.

And as usual, we get a different perspective on everything from Mr. Trout.

Bob Trout would have been in his fifties for most of the Vietnam war, he was born in 1909.

Yeah, I'm thinking that's not actually true. Nice, but not actually true.

You tell him that. He's big, and they made him stop taking Aleve after the blood thinner.

Hah! I wish you could meet him. He is larger than life and he has massive PTSD, from a known event. You can judge his veracity on your own, but in any case you'll have a good time.

just because someone is mostly really real does not mean that everything everyone says is really factual. it is not generally useful to debate this point though.

You're right, and exaggeration abounds. I wasn't defending the cabbie story as much as the PTSD there. He's right that vets get disparaged as nutcases, but a lot of it is clearly not socially constructed.

Oh god yeah, not to mention that while the specifics might not be true the underlying sentiment is often really horribly true.

I have a really good hgih school friend who was in Special Forces. There is sad stuff afoot.
