| Obakeneko, or "Cat demons," are another subset of the "Henge," or shape-shifter demons. Obakeneko are rarely seen in their true form, preferring instead to transform into beautiful women. On the surface, Obakeneko seem harmless enough, causing no direct harm to humans; however, a closer look at the behavior of the Obakeneko reveals it to be a dangerous and malevolent creature; for the Obakeneko is wont to seduce young men into marriage, where it slowly but inexorably drains the life from them every night while they sleep. Men under the influence of Obakeneko age at an extremely rapid pace, and by the time they discover the cause, the Obakeneko has disappeared, transformed into another woman, and is busy seducing another man. |
Cat demons are almost invariably evil; the only way to expose a woman as an Obakeneko is to catch her in flagrante delicto, that is, in the act of draining her victim. Obakeneko, like Kitsune, are also fond of playing terrible tricks upon mortals, and delight in driving their victims, slowly, but surely into madness. They are truly deserving of their status as demons, although, if one treats an Obakeneko well enough, he may temporarily tame her into a harmless vixen, i.e. a "sex kitten." At any moment, however, the tamer of the Obakeneko must expect her to forget his kindness and revert back to her demonic mentality.
